Day Shift (2022) Review: Jamie Foxx, Snoop Dogg, and Vampires
"Day Shift" is a new vampire hunting movie starring Jamie Foxx and Dave Franco. The movie follows the story of a hard working blue collar dad who just wants to provide a good life for his quick-witted daughter, but his mundane San Fernando Valley pool cleaning job is a front for his real source of income, hunting and killing vampires as part of an international Union of vampire hunters.
The premise sounds fun, but can director J.J. Perry deliver?
The opening scene of the movie is a bonkers action sequence with Jamie Foxx shotgun blasting the hell out of an old lady who turns out to be a vampire. This then becomes a nuts fight sequence between the two of them that is such a blast. I feel like the movie really has fun with these kind of rag-doll physics in its action scenes, making those sequences pop in a way that a lot of the Netflix action movies (or action blockbusters these days) don’t.
Day Shift was a very mixed movie. On one hand, there is a lot of fun action scenes and some fun characters (the two brothers and Seth), but on the other hand the villain was horrible, a lot of mediocre characters, though I guess that helps the better characters shine even more. There seemed to be missing scenes that were cut. Bud's neighbor acts like they're friends, even though before the final scene she maybe had 3 minutes of screen time. The best part of the movie was definitely when Bud went to work at the gas station and started making prank phone calls. It was hilarious, and I loved watching it. But then the rest of the movie happened, and it wasn't nearly as good. So, overall, I'd say that Day Shift is a mixed bag. Some parts are great, and some parts are terrible. But if you're looking for a few laughs, you could do worse than this movie.
I almost forgot about Snoop Dogg. He's great in Day Shift. He makes the whole movie worth watching. I mean, his character is hilarious, and he has some great lines. But more than that, he's just so natural in the role. It's like he was born to play it.
